Once the design is drawn to scale, different coloured pieces of glass are cut to shape, and then joined together (as illustrated) using lead cames. When all the pieces are assembled, the lead is soldered at the joints and the leaded panel is sealed with a semi liquid putty cement.
Different coloured pieces of glass can also be fused together at high temperatures in a kiln. I like to incorporate fused pieces into a leaded panel, as this extends the design possibilities of the medium.
For representational work the glass pieces can also be painted with tracing black and shading paint and then fired in the kiln to make the effect permanent. Coloured transparent enamels can also be fired onto the glass to create special effects. However the more painting and firing takes place, the more expensive the process becomes.
